The impact of Òscar’s work The Styx grows, after its very successful premiere by the Orquestra de València and Baldur Brönnimann in September 2024

The orchestra Oviedo Filarmonía will perform Òscar Colomina i Bosch’s orchestral work The Styx as part of its 2025–26 season. The concert will take place on 11 December 2025 in Oviedo under the direction of conductor Lucas Macías.

The programme also includes Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major and Manuel de Falla’s Suites Nos. 1 and 2 from El sombrero de tres picos.

Originally commissioned by the Festival ENSEMS and premiered by the Orquestra de València under Baldur Brönnimann in September 2024, The Styx is the first in a series of Myths for orchestra that explore mythological traditions in which water is a central element in the passage between life and death. At the moment Òscar is working on the second part of this series, Wells of Forgetfulness, commissioned by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. The Styx takes as its starting point the mythological river that separates the worlds of the living and the dead, evoked in a sound world described by critics as “precise yet fluid,” “suggestive and emotionally resonant,” and full of “strange and incorporeal landscapes.”

Justo Romero (Levante-EMV / Beckmesser) wrote:

“The Valencian composer reaffirms his status as a major name in Spanish music […] A piece that moves not only through its dramatic significance but through its pure musical sense.”

This new performance of The Styx continues to amplify the work’s impact in orchestras and audiences, offering a powerful reflection on memory, transition, and the metaphysical boundary between this world and the next.
